Flying with Pets in Great Britain & the EU

Following the UK’s departure from the European Union on 1 January 2021, the rules for traveling with pets between Great Britain and the EU have changed.

The main difference affects journeys from Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) into the EU or Northern Ireland, as the former UK Pet Passport is no longer accepted for entry. However, pets traveling from EU member states into Great Britain may still use an EU Pet Passport.

For travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland or the EU, pet owners must now obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), issued within 10 days before departure. This certificate remains valid for up to four months for onward travel within the EU or for returning to Great Britain, but a new AHC is required for each subsequent trip out of Great Britain.

Regardless of direction, and for many non-EU destinations as well, pets must also:

  • Be microchipped

  • Be vaccinated against rabies

  • Have tapeworm treatment if traveling with a dog (with some country exceptions)

Once inside the EU, pets can generally travel between most member countries without additional restrictions, allowing for smooth onward journeys.
